Loki laughs--a stacatto, more of a bark--and Paul feels ten feet lighter. He doesn't joke, they don't joke, they don't laugh, but the absurdity of the situation is real as he watches Loki slide into the passenger side.

He tries to ignore the gnawing again, the guilt. He left and that's that, it was out of his hands. It was out of Loki's, too, and that doesn't make any of this hurt less. It doesn't stop the sudden spike of intimacy he feels the moment the last door closes and he turns the key to start it. When was the last time this had happened? He finds himself wishing it was night.

There's no music, just the hum of the engine and Paul immediately relaxes, feeling like now he can properly assess the situation as he pulls out. Loki's definitely the owner of the car, and Loki's also not stupid. Far from it, Loki had excelled in anything Paul had seen him do, that sheen of infatuated adoration never fully leaving him. Loki's probably got suspicions.

"Just came back," he answers, always vague and going back to his quiet demeanor. He gets on the highway, and decides to ask even though he already knows. He turns the correct direction of the nearest police station. He doesn't take his eyes off of Loki in the rearview. He'll stop at whatever coffee shop is along the way.

"Where am I taking you?"
